Description

This is a large Measham jug. This is the tallest jug made in Measham ware. The plaque faces frontwards and simply reads “Peace and Plenty 1887”. The body is filled with flowers and strips of leaves. They were a utility item used for beer, milk, even water.

Measham Ware is associated with canals and narrow boats in England, it was made from the last quarter of the 19th century until about 1914. Measham ware has a dark brown Rockingham glaze with white-clay additions colourfully painted, usually with flowers and often a personal motto. 

Condition

This is a very nice jug, there is a tiny ? nibble on the rim or it could have occurred during manufacture.
